This program will define the terms of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Significant changes in the brain will be outlined in addition to the 7-stage clinical course as defined by Dr Barry Reisberg. This program will review common communication and behavior expressions and explore resources for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options. An overview of nonpharmaceutical strategies for disease management will be reviewed with a focus on person- centered care approaches. This program meets the requirements of Public Act 102-0399, amending the Department of Professional Regulation Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois, adding Section 2105-365 which requires that health care professionals to have one hour of continuing education training on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias per renewal period.


  1. Participant will be able to define dementia, understanding reversible and irreversible causes.
  2. Participant will gain an understanding of the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
  3. Care plan development: documentation to meet individual needs with realistic goals and objectives.
  4. Participant will gain an understanding of the changes in the brain changes that occur as the disease progresses and the cognitive impact on communication and behavioral expression.
  5. Examine challenging behaviors and possible causes in terms of unmet needs.
  6. Participant will gain an understanding of treatment options and current strategies that support healthy communication and nonpharmaceutical behavioral management.
  7. Review of person-centered care approaches that support the person with dementia and their family/caregivers.

Presenter: Jonna Phelps

Jonna Phelps graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago with a M.A. in Clinical Psychology. She received her LCPC in 2001. She is also a Certified Care Manager with the National Academy of Care Managers, Certified Dementia Practitioner, and a Certified Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia Care Trainer with the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. Jonna has focused her attention on treating individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia’s. Jonna has extensive knowledge of the aging process and the emotional toll that physical and cognitive changes take on the person and the family. The goal of treatment is validation through re-focusing on individual strengths in order to improve overall quality of life.
