Overview

This presentation will familiarize participants with relevant legislation and the historical context of immigration enforcement as well as offer concrete strategies for allies to support and protect members of the undocumented community. Specific attention will be paid to understanding the impact of these policies on members of the immigrant community and identifying ways social workers can offer support at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of practice.

Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to describe the policies and legislation that form the foundation of current immigration enforcement activities in the U.S.
  2. Participants will identify strategies to support members of the immigrant community in the realms of direct practice, allyship, and advocacy work.
  3. Participants will describe the social and psychological effects of current immigration enforcement activities in the U.S., for immigrants in general and for those without status in particular.

Presenter: Stephanie Carnes

Stephanie Carnes, Ph.D., LCSW, LL.M, is a bilingual clinician, advocate and researcher with extensive experience serving Central American immigrant youth. Her research focuses on the lived experiences of Central American immigrant youth in public schools, specifically how dynamics such as xenophobia and nativism impact processes of bicultural identity development. In a consulting capacity, Dr. Carnes partners with school districts and community organizations that seek to better understand the immigrant populations they serve.

Dr. Carnes brings an anti-oppressive, social justice-oriented lens to the courses she teaches. In addition to a doctorate in social welfare and an MSW degree, she also holds an LL.M Masters of International Human Rights Law. She is actively involved in the National School Social Workers Association of America (SSWAA) and the New York State School Social Workers Association (NYSSSWA). She speaks fluent Spanish.
