Overview
Biases are simply a tendency for or against something or someone, and we all have them. But how do our biases shape the subtle ways we interact with others? If some biases can be unconscious, how are we supposed to do anything about them? Join Ross Wantland from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for an interactive conversation on the impact of biases in our work and lives – and what we can do about them. This session will move beyond the biases we all hold to examine strategies to minimize bias and increase fair-minded processes. This session covers the Implicit Bias requirement for licensure in the state of Illinois.
Objectives
- Understand the ways that implicit biases impact processing and decision-making
- Reflect upon and identify one’s own implicit (and explicit) biases.
- Name strategies for decreasing stereotypes and implicit biases in professional and personal lives.

Presenter: Ross Wantland
Ross Wantland is the Director of Curriculum Development and Education in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ross is a farm-raised social justice and violence prevention educator, who received his Master’s in Education in Educational Policy Studies and BS in Psychology with a minor in Women's Studies, all at the University of Illinois. Ross lives in Champaign with his incredible partner, emo teen, and pandemic garden.
