Understanding Suicide: Strategies for Empathic Risk Assessment (Non-CE)

Overview

This training session will discuss insights from the field of suicidology to deepen participants’ theoretical understanding of suicide. These theoretical insights are intended to increase empathy for those suffering with suicidal thoughts and feelings, while also informing clinical interventions to prevent suicide deaths. The trainer will review core components of suicide risk assessment and crisis intervention, including safety-planning and hospitalization, from a trauma-informed perspective.

Objectives

1. Expand and deepen participants’ theoretical understanding of suicide including the psychological and sociological factors contributing to suicide
   
2. Review core competencies involved in suicide risk assessment procedures
   
3. Increase participants’ knowledge and skills in strategies to clinically intervene with clients at risk of suicide, including safety-planning and hospitalization

Presenter: Tom Miebach

Tom Miebach (He/Him) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional with over 15 years of clinical experience, including crisis intervention and suicide prevention in both community and university settings. He currently works as a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of psychological trauma. He also teaches clinical courses for MSW students as an adjunct instructor at the University of Illinois School of Social Work. Outside of work, Tom enjoys writing music, cooking and spending time in nature. He is a lifelong resident of the Champaign-Urbana area.
