Full course description

Enroll Today, Start the Course on March 24th, 2025. This is a self-paced course. Begins 3/24/25.

This course introduces the immune system functions in health maintenance. The content will train students to consider the role of the immune system in animal responses to various health challenges and prompt them to develop an integrated, science-based approach to solving health problems by applying their knowledge of immune system structure and function in comprehending how the body detects, communicates, regulates, and corrects pathophysiologic perturbations.

During this course, students will be introduced to the foundational concepts of immunology and will discover how immune system disruptions impact the maintenance of animal health. Understanding these principles is foundational for developing skills in solving animal health problems, and designing new management and disease control strategies. Course participants will be challenged to consider the role of immunological homeostasis in animal health and to review factors that challenge and overcome health resilience in individuals and populations. They will also be asked to use the scientific literature to examine real-life cases related to immune system challenges and associated health failure.

What You'll Learn

  • Describe the structure and role of the mucosal defense system in the development and sustainability of animal health.
  • Explain how the immune system monitors and communicates health, danger, damage, and dysfunction in the body.
  • Evaluate the relative contribution of various internal and external factors to the disruption of the immune system's capacity to detect, communicate, and respond to health threats.
  • Apply the fundamentals of immunology in solving infectious disease problems in animal systems.
